Dielle Ciesco cares about your voice. This passion radiates through the pages of ‘Your True Voice’ – a book that invites your voice out to play. A magical invite, impossible to decline. It coaxes your voice from dark corners, fluffy clouds, or off hypnotic looping not-so-merry-go-rounds to stand in glorious freedom.
With over 18 years’ experience as a performer, teacher and healing facilitator, Dielle knows her stuff. She is creator of Vocal Toning Meditation, Transformational Voicework and Toning for Peace. She’s featured improvisational vocalist on the TLC series with Visionary Music creators of DNA Activation music, as well as on the Bliss of Being with Richard Shulman and the Pure Heart Ensemble.
Her work will ignite and inspire you. But I wanted to know what inspired her in writing the book in the first place.
Dielle Ciesco: Your True Voice is a companion to my first book, The Unknown Mother: A Magical Walk with the Goddess of Sound, which was the fictionalized version of the same material which arose out of my own explorations with sound and voice as healer. I had readers and clients asking me for exercises they could do through the 10 Gates of Sound…the physical voice, breath, letters, words, etc., and Your True Voice is the result. But since my work had been evolving since the first book, this new book contains a lot of the newer practices of Transformational Voicework as well.
Me: In my experience, most people hold fears around using their voice, whether it be expressing an opinion or the dreaded public speaking. Why is using the voice so unnerving for so many?
Dielle Ciesco: Quite simply, it’s fear. And with good reason. We are battling historical demons, not just personal ones. So in addition to the baggage we carry from childhood about being too loud, behaving inappropriately, hurting someone’s feelings, etc., we’re also purifying lifetimes of hangings, beheadings, burnings, and other tortures designed to dispirit and repress the people. It’s really no wonder people are more afraid of giving a eulogy than of being the eulogized!
But there’s another component. After a lifetime of self-censoring and locking ourselves down, there’s a ton of pressure built up there. That energetic pressure can feel bigger than we are, so a lot of people become overwhelmed by the thought of release…that it might never stop. The good news is, there are ways to overcome the fear and tools to manage the release.
Dielle Ciesco: Benefits to working with the voice are plentiful and immediate. The 5th chakra or throat is a purification center of the body. When we begin to work energy through the vocal channel, we are freeing the body of stagnation and stress. We take in more oxygen, alter our mood, release fear and the structures that uphold fear, and we begin to trust ourselves again.
There are benefits and then there’s potential. Imagine waking up every day free to change your story. Life just flows with ease and grace through you, so you can even remain centered and fluid in the face of adversity. Imagine opening to your own creative force so wide that both inhibition and efforting evaporate. Imagine a state of self-acceptance that embraces everything. Imagine a world in which we each communicate not from a place of maintaining an image or of manipulating another’s perceptions but from authenticity and clarity. That’s the power of your true voice.
Certainly. I’ve got my copy. My voice is delighted. I can feel it wriggle its body free from inside a deep dark cocoon. It’s ready to bask in the sunshine. What a delicious feeling! I will keep you all posted on how I manage to develop the centred strengthened sound of myself. Or perhaps you may simply hear me yodelling on the wind. I hope so. Better still, join me. Let’s share our journey of self-expression!
